Family visiting LA? How to make them jealous you live on the Pacific

With the holiday period upon a lot of you will be hosting in this fine city of ours. Family, friends, and others coming from far and wide to… see you or maybe just to take in this wonderful city – so let’s make sure you show them the best only. Undoubtedly you’ll have your own personal list of favorite places to go, but may we suggest a few fun things to do in Los Angeles that we’re sure would make your relatives jealous of “West Coast, Best Coast”?

Go to the beach

We are right next to the Pacific Ocean — that means wonderful weather, but also super quick and easy access to the possibilities that every beach holds. Enjoy the calm waters, sunny sand, and water activities galore at Santa Monica Beach, Dockweiler Beach, or Topanga State Beach.

While some beaches (Santa Monica for sure, and Venice) will be pretty touristy, that’s not a bad thing! Anybody could spend a couple happy hours exploring the SM Pier or enjoy the quirky treats (like Salt&Straw Ice Cream) at Abbott Kinney. If you’re looking for more nature-y fun places to go with kids, try Leo Carrillo Beach or Abalone Cove Beach where your little one can look at some tide pool creatures!

eat LA food

Dining in LA is always, always delightful, so definitely take your visiting family out! The ramen (like award-winning Tsujita) on Sawtelle, French dip sandwich at Philippe the Original, blueberry donuts at M&M’s, and lengua tacos at El Chato Taco Truck are some of my personal favorites. Also consider taking your visiting family to Grand Central Market or Abbott Kinney’s Foodtruck First Fridays to explore more of the culinary diversity that our city offers. If you’re concerned about picky eaters, no worries — there is definitely something delicious in LA for every little one.

Try some museums

Los Angeles has a really interesting culture, and part of that is all of the museums that we have. Try a family outing at The Getty Center. “The Getty”, not to be confused with The Getty Villa (another cute museum modeled after a Roman Villa) is  the art museum of LA, complete with a beautiful outside garden and killer views of the city. Los Angeles County Museum of Art, or LACMA, also has some cool art and those iconic lampposts outside. Taking your family to the Broad is also pretty popular, especially with the new Infinity Mirrored Room exhibition — plus, it’s free!

Go shopping (or window shopping!)

While LA isn’t quite Paris, it’s still a pretty stylish city with lots of shops, which might interest your family members from less urban centers. The Grove, Rodeo Drive, and 3rd Street Promenade are all aesthetic places to do some shopping. They include stores like Brandy Melville, Banana Republic, Madewell, Ladurée (macarons!), Barney’s New York, Brooks Brothers, and Jimmy Choo, among many more. Next to the Grove is also a local Farmers’ Market for local LA produce and a movie theatre for those kids that are a little tired of walking.

There are a ton of fun things to do in LA — we hope that our list helps you figure out where to take your family, and that thru your family outings they fall in love with this great city! 🙂
